Romanian product design awarded internationally - 201 Design Studio

Dizainăr

"The reason we started Dizainăr was to show the world that we have creators that we can help to become design professionals who make a living from what they are passionate about. Together with our designers and with the support of local manufacturers, we set out to build a vibrant home-grown product and concept market capable of competing at international standards. Today, we exhibit the products of over 100 designers, some of whom have won awards both at home and abroad.

In 2013, 20 Romanian designers exhibited for the first time at the International Furniture Fair in Milan on the occasion of the Dizainăr initiative, the shop through which we promote Romanian design. This year, the Milan International Furniture Fair also introduced two more Romanian design teams - 201 Design Studio and Ruxandra Sacaliș - who exhibited bravely on their own. We congratulate them, partly for the popularity they have gained and partly for the prizes their products have won both at Milan and the A Design Award."

201_2

201 Design Studio was founded in 2012 by Mira Ene and Codrin Stănciulescu, two young graduates of the Faculty of Interior Architecture, Product Design section at UAUIM.

The objects they create are based on functionality, responsible use and new ways of using materials. So far, the two designers have turned their attention to developing the existing products in their portfolio and exhibiting them at various national and international exhibitions and trade fairs. "The interaction between user and product is one of the key elements that determine our creative process," say the two product designers from 201 Design Studio.

In 2014, the Tui table, the Twig collection, the Xuman chair, the Axteroid and Lumpy lamps and the 2Seat armchair were selected to be exhibited at Salone Satellite in Milan.

Recently, Mira Ene and Codrin Stănciulescu won the silver medal at the international A' Design Award competition for the Axteroid lighting fixture (in the Lighting Products and Lighting Projects Design section) and the iron medal for the Twig collection (in the Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design section).

The challenge they faced in creating the Twig collection was for form to follow function while offering material optimization and robust yet harmonious products. In the case of the Axteroid luminaires, the challenge was to produce the lamp without the use of injection molding processes. The lamp is also designed in such a way that no matter what type or shape of bulb is used, the light will always be dispersed in all the directions for which it was designed.

Twig collection

The starting point for this project is the three-legged peasant chair. The collection symbolizes and renews this traditional object. The legs of the objects in the Twig collection reproduce the roots and trunk of a tree that has its crown transformed into a chair.

Asymmetry is an essential feature of these objects and is generated by the different heights where the legs loop to change direction and then loop back. This asymmetry, inspired by the plant world, provides an interesting aesthetic, and in the case of the bar stool serves as a footrest. These supports also give the user the choice of how low or how high to hold their legs.

The Twig collection is varied and versatile thanks to the variety of finishes allowing for interesting combinations.

Axteroid

Lighting fixture

Axteroid is a versatile luminaire because it can be used both as a ceiling or floor lamp. This adaptation and multiple use is possible thanks to the shape that guides and concentrates light at five points.

The lamp is designed to illuminate specific points without allowing a large dispersion of light and creates strong shades and warm, well-defined areas of light. The result is a scenic setting.

Tui table

Table

With an interactive and multifunctional character, Tui is a coffee table with storage space. The lathed elements are inspired by traditional motifs used in furniture making. These elements give an object an easily recognizable identity for any user. The shape is determined by the interactive character of the object and the elements that work together to strengthen the whole.

Lumpy

Lighting fixture

Lumpy is a floor lamp that represents a stylized silhouette following the proportions of the human body. "The 'head' provides light as other floor lamps do. It emits a warm light at an angle of 120 degrees. The two 'arms' are intended to provide light for reading or writing up to 60 cm from the source. Thanks to the many angles its arms can reach, mimicking the movement of the human arm, the Lumpy is an object that gives the user the comfort they need.

2seat

Armchair

2seat is a "2-sided" chair design, an object that with a simple flip turns into a chaise longue and vice versa. The dual function transforms the chair into an attractive object for the user, giving him the possibility to choose his position and comfort level in the simplest possible way, by turning it upside down. Both parts are carefully and closely designed in relation to each other in order to control the final volume, but without compromising the ergonomics of either.
