...and the arts with which it connects

Art Encounters: appearance and essence

In October, more than 100 of the most important Romanian artists from Romania and abroad will gather in Timisoara and Arad for the first edition of Art Encounters. The event, which is in its infancy, aims to provide a platform for initiating several curatorial dialogues on the Romanian art scene: a diachronic dialog between different generations of artists, taking place for the first time in the Romanian context; a dialog between the Romanian art scene and the international context; and an interaction between the local art scene in Timișoara and the wider community of artists at national level. Thus, the event features artists who were active during the communist period - either in the country, in the context of an imposed isolation, such as the Sigma Group, Geta Brătescu, Ion Grigorescu, or abroad, in exile, such as Paul Neagu or André Cădere. A number of artists who established themselves in the 1990s, such as Dan Perjovschi, SubREAL. The younger generation is represented by names such as Ioana Nemeș, Ciprian Mureșan, Mircea Cantor, Adrian Ghenie.

The event includes 34 exhibitions held in 20 locations, ranging from conventional spaces such as the Art Museum, the Memorial of the Revolution, and art galleries, to less conventional spaces for artistic interventions including the Synagogue of the Citadel, Timco Halls and the Barracks U. The valorization of these spaces was made possible by the contribution of O.A.R., Timis branch. Thus, the palette of information about each location was enriched by adding an ahistorical dimension to the discourse about the exhibition spaces. Also, this partnership between Art Encounters and O.A.R. Timiș also included the staging of larger scale exhibitions - such as those at the U Barracks or the exhibition about the artistic group Sigma. And last but not least, a_ta 2015 - one of the complementary events, contributing with a series of round tables and discussions about the confluence of art and architecture.

Starting with this first edition of Art Encounters, October is set to become the month for culture in Timișoara thanks to this new partnership between Art Encounters and O.A.R. Timiș, on the basis of which the Art Biennale is organized in tandem with the Architecture Biennale.
