PRESS RELEASE
Transylvania Architecture Biennale gets underway:
19 events in 15 days in Baia Mare,
with themes for the specialized public but also for the whole family

The opening of the BATRA 2019 Exhibition, guided tours, the Monument Ambulance, Sweet Gingerbread Sweet Huts or the Impact of Micro-hydropower. These are just some of the BATRA 2019 events in Baia Mare.
The debut of the Transylvania Biennale of Architecture Transylvania 2019 in Baia Mare will take place tomorrow, November 8, at 5 p.m., at the headquarters of the Order of Architects - North-West Branch (str. Minerilor, nr.11) the Monuments Ambulance will be "parked". It is a pilot project that aims to act effectively in the field of safeguarding immovable heritage, by making safe important heritage objectives in an advanced state of decay or pre-collapse. Anyone can contribute financially or by volunteering to save a monument. To date, six interventions have been carried out on heritage sites in southern Transylvania: the Brîncovenească Gate in Sâmbăta de Sus, the fortified church in Velț, the Heroes' Monument in Seleuș, the Orthodox Church in Gherdeal, the ruined defense tower in Apața and the CFR railway station in Șaeș. The results of these six interventions will be presented in pictures in an exhibition to be unveiled on this occasion.
Following the program, on Saturday, from 3.00 p.m., in the Millennium Business Center 1 Conference Room (str. Mihai Viteazu, nr.17), the opening of the Exhibition-competition of the works entered for the BATRA Awards will take place, in the following sections:
- Architecture of individual housing
- Collective housing architecture
- Community and production facilities architecture
- Architecture of public space
- Cultural Heritage Architecture
- Rural
- Interior architecture and scenography
- Micro architecture / Temporary architecture
- Object design
- Cultural Projects / Initiatives / Experiments
The exhibition will be simultaneously on display in the other cities where the Romanian Order of Romanian Architects' branches are partners in BATRA 2019: Cluj Napoca, Oradea, Satu Mare and Alba Iulia.
On November 11, from 3.00 p.m., a free discussion on the organization of architectural competitions will take place at the Colonia Pictorilor. This event will be attended by representatives of the local public administration (Mayor of Baia Mare, Cătălin Cherecheș, Chief Architect, Morth Izabella), representatives of the County Council, as well as architects who have competed in such competitions. The discussion will be moderated by our colleague, architect Oxana Crăciun.
On November 12, from 10.00 a.m., at the headquarters of the Order of Architects - North-West Branch, there will be a course on Photography with Mobile Phone. They say that the best camera is the one you have with you. Cell phones fit the description perfectly, because they are always with us, they always have a camera and, thanks to the progress of new smartphone technology, the camera does a pretty good job. Great pictures are now within reach wherever you go. Phone photography has its limitations, of course, but all the little shortcomings can be overcome and the results, the photos taken with your phone, can be spectacular. The course aims to help participants to use their smartphone for photography. The course will be given by professional photographers from Ciorchin.
On November 15, from 5:30 p.m. at the NV OAR headquarters, a long-debated topic will be addressed during the panel discussion The Environmental and Community Impacts of Micro-Hydropower Plants. Authorities tell us that micro-hydropower plants are good because they create jobs and solve local electricity needs. But what is their environmental impact? We will try to find out all the pros and cons of creating micro-hydropower plants on Romanian rivers, in a discussion with lecturer Dr. Mihai Vasilescu, from the Faculty of Physics at Babeș-Bolyai University.
On Friday, November 15, starting at 2 p.m., the Administrative Palace, the work of renowned architect Mircea Alifanti, will open its doors to the curious. The tour of the building will include both the exterior and interior spaces, and will be guided by the county's chief architect, George Lazăr.
Saturday, November 16, from 10am, we start our family weekend in Baia Mare. Căsuțe Dulci is a gingerbread making workshop, aimed at children (regardless of age), designed by architects. The workshop is part of the activities for children and family designed by the organizers to involve the whole community in the architectural process - which ultimately means creating a future for the whole family. The little ones will have the opportunity to connect with this field, by "designing" (preparing and kneading the dough), "building" (molding the dough into shapes), "finishing" (baking) and "handing over" (the products made will be able to be kept/taken home/eaten) houses... made of gingerbread. Not for nothing, but knowing how to make gingerbread is a useful "hobby" as the winter holidays approach.
