Diploma Project - Center of Applied Arts "Sf. Vineri", Bucharest

Faculty of Architecture USH

Teodora-Maria Ganea chose the theme and site of her emotionally motivated diploma. St. Friday's and the rest of the "in-between" areas of Bucharest, left after the intervention of the 1980s, are part of the relatively static reality she encounters on a daily basis. He only knew the St. Friday's area from family stories, from pictures, from school classes. The lack of historical experience of the place became an advantage and a motivator for what she set out to do: in confronting reality with an idyllic past, she managed to give the place a possible future, linking the two.

Her approach was based on urban, historical and sociological analysis of the area and the whole surrounding area. She realized and wanted her diploma to be not just a single building, but a whole: an urban, architectural and functional weave linking together the fragments of historical fabric, the object-buildings, the screen of blocks and the new isolated towers with their plinths, typologies of recent investments.

The unifying piece, which has also become the project's leitmotiv, decided to be the enclosure: a space of transition and mediation from one typology to another. The scale of the void and of the built environment is humanized, creating spaces reminiscent of the physical qualities of the former neighborhood, but also offering the physical comfort necessary for the development and amplification of today's functions and pedestrian flow. The functions chosen are applied arts workshops, housing, community center, bistro, food market, a coagulation that could lead to the formation of a pole for young creatives, which would feed and activate, reinventing, the neighborhood. The choice of concrete as a material emphasizes the desire for permanence, as a statement of a regained place.
