The Pritzker Prize, the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in architecture, was awarded this year to one of India's most renowned modern architects, Balkrishna Doshi, for his body of work spanning more than 60 years. For Doshi, an architect, urban planner and professor (himself a member of the Pritzker jury from 2005-2009), the 2018 Pritzker Prize is a well-deserved recognition of his exceptional qualities as an architect, amply demonstrated by more than 100 projects, his devoted involvement in the life of the local communities he works for, his insight as a teacher who shapes generations of students and professionals around the world through the example of his architectural feats and his flawless academic and professional conduct.

NOTES
1. 'Gufa' means 'cave' in Gujarati.
2. It was originally named Husain-Doshi ni Gufa, after the architect B. V. Doshi and the artist M. F. Husain. It was later renamed after the city of Ahmedabad, known locally as Amdavad.
