The ArtCrowd Association - Artists in Education presents "Back to the Future - Commemorative Exhibition Architect Ion Popa", from October 22 to November 12, 2020, at the headquarters of the Romanian Union of Architects in Bucharest, within the project "Back to the Future - Romanian Design at the Crossroads".

This exhibition aims at recovering a personality from the pioneering period of Romanian design and design education in Bucharest, architect Ion Popa, 2020 being the commemorative year of 30 years since his death. In his professional activity, Ion Popa constantly carried out projects in large interdisciplinary teams, co-founded the first design studio in Romania, Studio DA, and was one of the main organizers of the first and largest Design event in Romania, the National Design Seminar in 1974, as a result of which the term "design" entered the Romanian professional vocabulary.

The exhibition will focus, on the one hand, on exhibiting archival photographs that have never been shown to the general public before, documenting the professional activity of architect Ion Popa in the 70s and 80s, as a member of the architecture and design group Studio DA, as a designer or as a lecturer at the National University of Arts in Bucharest (1974-1990), and on the other hand, it will make an attempt to outline his expansive and explorative personality, which fostered his pioneering design achievements. Opening: October 22 at 16:00- 19:00, during the opening event the correct wearing of the mask as well as a minimum distance of 1 50 m is mandatory. Throughout the opening, public access to the exhibition space will be limited to 5 people at the same time.

Symposium "Back to the Future- Romanian Design at the Crossroads

Also on November 12, we invite you to the "Back to the Future" Symposium 2020. It is dedicated to young designers and students in design and related fields, and will aim, along with setting historical milestones, to bring together people connected to the history of Romanian design as well as its future. The papers will be presented on the following topics: the beginnings of Romanian design in the context of the 70's and 80's and important events in the field, current Romanian design as x-rayed by different generations, Romanian design in the international context and possible future directions.
