We have obligations to young people!
Ileana Tureanu
The year 2021 was a special year for the Romanian Union of Architects, also thanks to the 14th edition of the National Biennale of Architecture, which proved - despite an unfavorable context - that there is a colossal creative force in Romania, a huge energy of young architects, a remarkable involvement and initiative and a need for permanent communication and dialog, but, above all, that we have a human resource that we are not allowed to ignore and waste.
We have an obligation to young people!
The National Biennale of Architecture - with the title "ACUM" - was a historic edition, because of the scale of participation, because it continued to be held throughout the country, because it was the largest and most disputed edition, with a wide and young participation, an edition with ingenious projects that proved that architecture of value is made in all corners of the country. If 2021 was again a year devoid of national programs and strategies, our work was almost exclusively due to private initiatives.
It is gratifying to be able to conclude, in a year haunted by illness, uncertainty, contestation and incompetence, a complete Biennale with projects of exceptional quality. We wanted the 2021 Biennale to be not a sickly and frightened manifestation of pandemonium, but a strong and forceful response from a guild willing and able to engage with both the global problems of the planet and the local dilemmas and difficulties and issues on the scale of everyday life, of each and every one of us.
More than 600 projects in 15 sections took part in the Biennale competition (because architects have sought and found new ways to get involved and express themselves, with the Summer Camps, Creative and Crafts and Visionary Architecture sections being the novelties). The Biennale proved the Romanian architects' ability not only to assimilate international experiences and trends, but also to find original, personal, innovative responses.
Established names and beginners competed side by side, professionals from all corners of the country, trained in the 4 faculties of architecture. The uniqueness of each section of the Prize has been preserved in order to emphasize excellence and not to detract from its prestige and prestige.
The selection of the winners was the most difficult exercise to which the jury's well-known and recognized personalities were subjected, under strict and rigorous rules, the only criterion being the value of the creative act. The list of prize-winners includes well-known names, but above all names we will be hearing about from now on.
For almost 30 years, the National Architecture Biennale has continued to be the largest architecture competition organized in Romania. Not only the prize-winning projects, but all the valuable participating projects will be promoted through UAR magazines and publications and through UAR Exhibitions and participations in national and international events.
The National Biennale of Architecture has made it possible to discover outstanding projects and initiatives from different areas that have become sources of inspiration for specialists and builders in the country. The collateral events organized (exhibitions, seminars, symposia, conferences, workshops) in 8 cities in the country - Bucharest, Cluj, Iași, Timișoara, Sibiu, Târgoviște and Târgu Mureș - gave architects the opportunity to make their voices heard. In this respect, the presence of the mayors of Cluj, Sibiu and Târgu Mureș and the president of the Association of Romanian Municipalities, the debates they took part in, is a first and a proof of interest and recognition of the fact that the BNA has managed to convince the government that architects are a force to be reckoned with if they want to make cities and villages a better place to live in.
The National Biennale of Architecture wanted to show that architects are a united guild and that the Union and the Romanian Order of Architects intend to join forces to promote architecture and architects.
