UrbanEye Film Festival takes place November 7-11, 2018

31.10.2018

The fifth edition of the UrbanEye Film Festival will take place this year from November 7-11 at the Elvira Popescu Cinema and Apollo 111 Theater. UrbanEye Film Festival talks about the city and urban life through film. The program for the new edition will feature topical films, accompanied by debates with special guests, as well as related events, from exhibitions to guided tours and workshops for children.

For five days, viewers will have the chance to see documentaries and fiction films that explore the central theme of inhabitation in its various forms. In addition, films about significant contemporary architects, new approaches to cities through games, and other relevant topics about the built environment will be on show.

Housing is one of the central themes of the festival, with audiences having the opportunity to see films such as The Other Side of Everything (Directed by Mila Turajlic), about an apartment divided in two by the communist regime in Belgrade and the story of the family who lived in it, The Disappearance of Robin Hood (Directed by: Klearjos Eduardo Papanicolaou), about the demolition of the famous British social housing complex designed by Peter and Alison Smithson, or Slums: Cities of Tomorrow (Directed by Jean-Nicolas Orhon ), about informal housing and the spread of such spaces around the world.

As every year, the festival also features films about architects: REM (directed by Tomas Koolhaas), about the influential architect Rem Koolhaas and Glenn Murcutt: Spirit of Place (directed by Catherine Hunter). Viewers can also watch films about how houses were built for personalities such as Andrzej Wajda (in The Idea is Paramount. The Architectural Passions of Andrzej Wajda) and mathematician Jim Stewart (in Integral Man).

A film making its national premiere at the festival is Gaming the Real World, which highlights the use of video games to stimulate residents' involvement in planning the areas where they live. The film looks at the concept of civic gamification, or civic participation through games, which contributes to the democratization of architecture and urban planning. Among those offering an informed perspective on the phenomenon are the creators of Minecraft, Cities: Skyline and Block'hood.

The program also includes side events such as workshops for children, workshops for high school students, guided tours and an exhibition on housing in Romania, in partnership with MKBT: Make Better.

Many of the films screened have been part of the selection of renowned international festivals and have won important awards, with The Other Side of Everything being awarded at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival and chosen as a LUX Prize finalist, Aquarius being awarded at the Dublin International Film Festival, and Last Days in Shibati being presented at the Cinéma du réel - International Documentary Film Festival.
