Bucharest Triennial East Centric Architecture

Bucharest, October 7-20, 2019

Call for projects and theoretical contributions

The Arhitext Design Foundation has been carrying out editorial and cultural projects for more than 20 years, which x-ray local and international events in the fields of architecture, urbanism and visual arts. Some of the Foundation's best-known projects are Arhitext Magazine, among the most important trend magazines in the field, and the East Centric Architecture Triennale, dedicated to the Central and Eastern European region.

In autumn 2019, the Arhitext Design Foundation, in partnership with the Romanian Order of Architects and the University of Architecture and Urbanism "Ion Mincu" will organize in Bucharest the third edition of the East Centric Architecture Triennale, with the theme ACASĂ|oriunde|nicăieri|? (HOME|any|more|?). The aim is to question the possibility of being at home in contemporary society, and to ask the question of memory and identity, of place and, of course, of our home. How have we lived, how do we live and how will we live?

This year's curatorial team is headed by writer, poet and translator Bogdan Ghiu, and this year's prestigious guests include Sarah Robinson (USA/Italy), Marc Jay (Denmark), Eva Prats & Ricardo Flores (Flores & Prats Architects, Barcelona).

In previous editions (2013, 2016), the Triennale has brought together numerous architects, professors and theorists in the field of architecture. Among the keynote speakers and jury members of previous editions were: Svetlana Boym (Russia), Dietmar Feichtinger (Austria/France), Terunobu Fujimori (Japan), Barbara Holub (Austria), Robert Mair (Austria), Robert Mair (Austria), Willem Jan Neutelings (Netherlands), Juhani Pallasmaa (Finland), Alberto Pérez-Gómez (Canada/Mexico), Boris Podrecca (Austria), Sami Rintala (Norway), Vladimir Šlapeta (Czech Republic), Ana Maria Zahariade (Romania).

As in the past, the focus of the new edition will be on the Central and Eastern European region, broadly defined: Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Estonia, Greece, Kosovo, Lithuania, Latvia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Ukraine. In preparation for the two main events of the Triennale, components of the thematic module of the Triennale, the thematic exhibition HOME|any|more|? and the Critical Discourses Essay Competition, two calls for entries were launched in November 2018, to which both relevant practitioners from this area and theorists from any corner of the world who are concerned with the specific issues of this area are still expected to respond.

Call for entries for the thematic exhibition HOME|any|more|?

The thematic exhibition is the central event of the Triennale and aims to provide an overview of how architecture broadly responds to the current needs and specific context of Central and Eastern Europe. The call is addressed to architecture, urban planning or design professionals from the Central and Eastern European region, who are invited to submit projects completed between 2016-2019. Selected projects will be included in the exhibition and its catalog.

Deadline for project submission: 4.02.2019
