SoNoRo Festival XIV - A Dadaist Manifesto!

The 14th edition of the SoNoRo Festival will take place from November 1-17, 2019, in Bucharest, Sibiu and Cluj-Napoca. This year, the Festival will bear the name DaDa and will be dedicated to the powerful creative energy of the Dadaist phenomenon, started in the early 20th century in Zürich by a group of European artists organized around the Romanian-born writer Tristan Tzara.

Tickets and subscriptions to the Festival are available until October 10, 2019 at a reduced, early-bird price.

SoNoRo Festival announces its 14th edition under the sign of Dadaism, intuitive art and experiments in which chamber music is free, natural and unusual.

Dadaism was a nonconformist cultural and artistic movement, directed against routine in life, mental and artistic patterns, representing a resolute yes to human freedom and freedom of expression, in the context of the existence of the First World War.

The SoNoRo Festival proposes to the public an edition crystallized around the theme of Dadaism, to discover composers, new works and performances, unconventional spaces where chamber music can be an original and extravagant element, supported by 30 renowned musicians from 25 European countries. Thus, artists with prodigious international careers responded with an emphatic "DaDa" to the invitation of Răzvan Popovici, the festival's executive director, and Diana Ketler, artistic director.

"For the 14th edition we want to transform the SoNoRo Festival into a Dadaist manifesto, to bring this creative energy to the concert spaces where we return every year: the Cotroceni Palace, the Radio Hall, the Romanian Athenaeum, the Aula of the Babeș-Bolayi University or the National Bank of Cluj-Napoca, but we aim to surprise the audience with new spaces where chamber music will sound unconventional and perhaps even bizarre, but convincing.

With the chosen program, we will invite the audience to listen to music differently - more attentive, but also more playful, with more humor - we will experiment in a Dadaist style, enriching the classical repertoire by creating an authentic and unusual musical collage", says Răzvan Popovici.

The SoNoRo DaDa Festival will be launched on November 1 with a concert at the Cotroceni Palace, in the Sala Unirii. The opening concert entitled "DA, DAAAA!" will feature an eclectic mix of works by composers John Cage, Ciprian Porumbescu, Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert, performed by some of today's greatest musicians: French violinist Nicolas Dautricourt, Romanian-born violinist Mihaela Martin, cellists Justus Grimm and Frans Helmerson, violinists Meghan Cassidy and Răzvan Popovici, the Festival's Executive Director, together with pianist Diana Ketler, SoNoRoRo Festival Artistic Director.

"Perhaps, looking at the proposed repertoire, the audience will be displeased. John Cage and Ciprian Porumbescu alongside Beethoven and Schubert? What is this collage? Dada? That's exactly what it is, and the concert itself will be transformed into a manifesto, with moments we won't reveal until the premiere. Come and join us for a SoNoRo Cabaret Voltaire, a reinterpretation of chamber music in a modern key, with Dadaist accents," says Diana Ketler.

Founded in 2006, the SoNoRo Festival has brought chamber music to the forefront of Romanian cultural life and has included the Romanian music scene in a network of high-profile European festivals.
