Someș Shore Contest. First prize
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
By presenting a variety of solutions for the different conditions of the river Someș, the proposal reimagines the role of the river as it crosses the city of Cluj-Napoca over a distance of more than 15 km.
The river Someș is no longer perceived as a thin line that divides the city in two, but as a wide strip that is part of the city, merging distinct ecological systems and integrating the public space. The Someș is conceived as an urban connecting element of public spaces and green areas, as well as a main route for pedestrians and bicycles.

The project aims to bridge the gap between the river and the city. First, a system of terraces extends the river bank and allows it to penetrate the urban fabric. By widening the river section, the existing solid riverbank is transformed into a smoother and more natural environment, incorporating elements of local vegetation, stones and sand. The terrace system increases the accessibility of the river and incorporates recreational areas where numerous activities can take place. Secondly, a system of bicycle lanes and footpaths provides continuity to the currently interrupted travel routes along the river and transforms the Someș into a key artery through the whole city. Third, a system of diagonal paths aims to connect the river and its immediate context. These paths redefine existing urban connections by extending them towards the waterfront, realizing a visual and physical unity of the urban fabric and the river.
