New European Bauhaus 2022

21.01.2022

Following the success of the first awards, which received over 2,000 entries last year, the 2022 edition will celebrate inspiring new examples of the transformations that the initiative aims to bring to our lives, the spaces we live in and our everyday experiences. As in the first edition, the 2022 New European Bauhaus Awards will reward the ideas of young talents, as well as existing projects for sustainability, inclusivity and aesthetics that bring the European Green Deal to people and local communities.
Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said: 'The new European Bauhaus builds on Europe's culture, education, science and innovation to turn the promises of the European Green Deal into improvements in our daily lives. I look forward to seeing the pinnacle of European creativity come to life in this year's applications."
Commissioner for Cohesion and Reform Elisa Ferreira said: "Now more than ever, we need sustainable and innovative ideas that transform the way we live and work and leave no one behind. The new European Bauhaus rewards the best, boldest and smartest concepts that aim to improve our regions and cities in a way that respects both people and planet. Cohesion policy will continue to help turn these new ideas into reality in all European regions for the benefit of all our communities."
The awards will be given to projects and ideas that contribute to creating beautiful, sustainable and inclusive places, and fall into four categories:
- Reconnecting with nature;
- regaining a sense of belonging;
- Prioritizing places and people most in need;
- Fostering integrated, long-term and life-cycle thinking in the industrial ecosystem.
The categories reflect the four thematic axes of transformation of the new European Bauhaus. They were identified during the co-design phase of the initiative, with thousands of people and organizations contributing their views and experiences. Entries will be judged against the three core values of the initiative: sustainability, aesthetics and inclusiveness. Candidates from all Member States, as well as from all over the world, are encouraged to apply as long as their projects/ideas are located in the European Union.
Each category contains two parallel competition components:
- 'New European Bauhaus' awards - for existing examples completed within the last two years and
- "Rising Stars of the New European Bauhaus" - for concepts or ideas submitted by young creators, aged 30 or under.
In addition to the 16 prizes awarded by the jury (one winner and one runner-up for each category and component), two additional prizes will be selected by a public vote from the top entries. In total, 18 winners will receive prize money of up to €30,000 as well as a communication package to help them further develop and promote their initiatives.
Applications must be received until February 28, 2022, 19:00CET. We welcome applicants of all nationalities and from all backgrounds, as long as their concepts, ideas and projects are developed or physically located in the EU.

Background
The New European Bauhaus is an economic, cultural and environmental project, aiming to combine design, sustainability, accessibility, affordability and investment to contribute to the realization of the European Green Pact.
Launched by President von der Leyen during her 2020 State of the Union address, the new European Bauhaus was designed jointly with thousands of people and organizations across Europe and beyond.
In September 2021, the initiative moved from the phase of joint design to deliverables, with a Commission Communication setting out policy actions and funding to turn the initiative into reality.
