International research group Dark Matter Labs is the curator of the Bucharest Architecture Annual 2024

The curator of the XXII edition of the Bucharest Architecture Annual (AAB) 2024 is the international research group Dark Matter Labs through its representatives, the main founders of the group: arch. Indy Johar (England), arh. Ivana Stancic (Denmark) and urb. Joost Beunderman (Netherlands).

Curatorial statement

In the midst of a crisis of climate change, deteriorating nature and biodiversity, pollution and waste, we must recognize that Europe's built environment needs to reduce more than 95% of its carbon footprint by 2030 to avoid climate collapse. At a time when many countries are facing a housing crisis and modernization of the building stock is essential to reduce energy consumption, we also need to address the embodied carbon and other environmental damage caused by 'building as usual'.

Dark Matter Labs is actively involved in the EU's Mission for 100 Climate Neutral Cities by 2030 and the New European Bauhaus. It also works with numerous cities, philanthropic and other organizations to accelerate the transition to a renewable and equitable future.

The overarching theme of the Bucharest Architecture Annual 2024 is Sustainable Bucharest and follows the triad of Annuals centered on the New European Bauhaus European program, whose core values are sustainability, inclusivity and aesthetics. The Bucharest Architecture Annual applies each year, as a research optic, a European value to Bucharest and analyzes it from this perspective.
