Silva Artis

The Silva Artis story began modestly enough, with a limited purpose. I wanted to create two types of furniture pieces for my own apartment: a small table made of a thick trunk mounted on a multitude of wheels, like a centiapod, and a series of high stools for dining.

I realized I would have difficulty in actually making them. Not because it would be complicated to execute, it's just that I didn't really have anyone to do it with. So, armed with enthusiasm/unconsciousness I decided I would do them myself, right in my apartment. I ordered my wood from a gater, green obviously, started buying what tools I thought I needed and got to work.

A few tons of tools later and a bit more experience, together with my brother, we crossed the DIY threshold and already starting to have quite a diverse portfolio of completed pieces and returning customers.

We are rediscovering traditional woodworking techniques and tools, but are guided by a modern formula. Whether carving with a chisel, leaving a chisel mark, or straightening the wood, we try to bring out the texture, design and particularities of the material as much as possible.

On the one hand, we produce objects with a stand-alone idea/identity, which form the basis of the Silva Artis catalog, and on the other hand, we have made pieces that are adapted to the site, but keep the same attitude towards form and material.

A few pieces we consider to be closest to the essence of what we want to say and which have been appreciated by others: the 3xfagacea bench, made of 3 oak logs arranged vertically and joined with hidden joints, the 1fagacea stool, which combines the cut-out oak trunk with four large industrial wheels, and the 12xfagus coffee table, with which we started the Silva Artis project.

We have taken part in a number of trade fairs and have objects on permanent display in places such as Annart, Alchemia, Aiurart, Cărturești bookshop and Dizainăr shop.

Recently, we have begun to explore new techniques and configurations: we have superficially burned the wood to bring out the grain, we experiment with pieces with mechanisms, with various configurations of moving parts, we incorporate ready-made components.

Silva Artis' mission, if you can call it that, is to aim for the authentic, the material, the substance. We aim to achieve pieces that surprise, not only in form, idea, but also in texture and comfort. Even things normally considered flaws, cracks and knots, we incorporate into the end result.

1. 1phagacea

Antagonism is the word that best characterizes this piece of furniture. The rigorous geometry of the form contrasts with the natural character of the wood. Industrial elements blend perfectly into the design of this oak stool.

material: oak

finish: wood oil

dimensions: 30x30x40 cm

2. 3+beech

A table with an oak worktop, at the crossroads between a utilitarian object and a sculpture, suitable for a unique arrangement, combining the rational with the organic. The simple, geometric surface of the worktop is counterbalanced by the organic legs made of tree trunks, treated with black balsam.

material: oak

finish: wood oil + black balsam

dimensions: 50x50x90 cm

3. morus betulacea

A generously sized 8-seater dining table that combines the lively edge of the thick mulberry top in satin finish with the geometric combination of the birch plywood top, suggesting the duality between the constructed and the natural, forming an exceptional presence in any contemporary interior.

The design surprisingly combines two different textures. To the touch, the birch birch plywood reveals its roughness, while the lacquered mulberry wood offers an unexpected smoothness, the two tactile sensations succeeding in creating an original piece that can give any interior a touch of the spectacular.

material: 50 mm hardwood top + 36 mm birch plywood

finish: satin polyurethane lacquer

dimensions: 300x80x72 cm

4. 3xfagacea

Table and stool in solid oak treated with wood-oil; it preserves the continuity of the wood design, but also the living edge, in a modern line, in which traditional joints are also found.

The flat outer faces are complemented on the inside by the irregular surface of the tree, uniformly treated with black balsam.

material: oak

finish: wood oil + black balsam

dimensions: 75x50x75 cm + 42x33x42 cm

5. cubik

A sculptural storage, suitable to be placed centrally, as the inflection point of a space. The solid oak drawer fronts have a spectacular design, echoed in the configuration of the top lid. With the drawers closed, it becomes a simple geometric shape, supported by three organic tree trunk legs.

material: oak

finish: wood oil

dimensions: 45x45x128 cm

6. 3xfagacea

A banquette whose shape is the result of joining 3 sections of the same oak trunk. The clear carvings give a strong character to the piece, which is doubled by the hardness of the wood, the deep cracks recalling the naturalness of the material.

material: oak

finish: wood oil

dimensions: 90x30x42 cm

7. 12xfagus

Clear, purist shapes define the massive series, with the cross-sectioned beech trunk dominating the pieces. Suitable in a more sober context, the objects in the massive series give class to a space, bringing the preciousness of wood.

material: beech

finish: satin polyurethane lacquer

dimensions: 38x38x45 cm

8. 1xbeech

Two elements come together in well thought-out proportions to create this stool with a very clear geometry. On one side we have the thick oak seat and on the other we have the tego plywood from which the legs are made, the result is an object with a unique design.

material: oak + birch plywood

finish: wood oil + black birch

dimensions: 30x30x60 cm
