Schönberg Live Studio 2021 is a summer school - pilot based on the concept of "outdoor live studio" and the principles of "learning by doing" and "hands on". The idea is based on the essential role of hands-on learning in combination with theory, through the power of imprinting in the memory and logical understanding of complex building principles.
In concrete terms, the practical intervention was carried out on a shed in a specifically Saxon household in the village of Dealu Frumos (in German, Schönberg) located in the geographical center of the country, in the county of Sibiu, in the immediate vicinity of the CSAV Center in the Fortified Church of Dealu Frumos. It is a cooperation between architectural academia, specialist organizations and distinguished guests, which supports a real need for practical experience and intervention on heritage through the training of essential skills and competences. Participants can thus become better acquainted with some of the specialties they will encounter in their professional career.
Students, open talks, local craftspeople
The summer school participants were students from all faculties in the country, from all years of study, including master's and doctorate level, as well as trainee architects registered with the OAR branches. Along with the transmission of knowledge, the formation of relationships between specialists and participants, and the development of a network of future heritage professionals, the sharing of common values and concerns also had a strong coagulating role of socialization on the principle of "Heritage & Wellbeing". Complementing the hands-on activities, participants enjoyed lectures by special guests, open discussions and getting close to local craftsmen, visits to nearby building sites and other rich local cultural experiences. Organized in two series over two weeks, August 16 - 29, Schönberg Live Studio 2021 cultivated continuity between the two sides and good collaboration between the different teams by specialties.
Direct exploration of the village
The activities that took place in Schönberg Live Studio 2021 allowed contact with different aspects of architecture and construction, with an emphasis on the latter. Thus, in the carpentry workshop coordinated by Sebastian Bethge (restorer carpenter) a part of the structure of one of the sheds in the house was rebuilt, the masonry and technical detailing workshop coordinated by Liviu Gligor (architect specialized in restoration) allowed to understand "live" the materials and work concretely on some portions of the wall, and the design workshop led by Cristina Constantin (architect and scenographer) aimed at in situ research, both through direct exploration of the village, the history of the household and the stages of construction, understanding the values and spatial characteristics of the different building bodies, and discussing functional scenarios in accordance with them. At the end of each of the two series, an "open-door" event exhibition was organized, which allowed both interaction with villagers and specialists and dissemination of the results of the summer school, as well as a critical reflection on the course and possibilities for improvement.
In our vision, the Schönberg Live Studio is a flexible concept that can be developed every year to best respond to training and intervention needs, topical themes and even "exported" in the future to other rural sites in the network of Saxon villages.
