Concept
The air terminal of an airport is an ENTRANCE GATE, not just an entrance-exit for passengers in a hurry, but an IMAGE that speaks about the place you have arrived. Thus, the concept underlying the architectural solution for the building of the passenger terminal of the BRAȘOV-GHIMBAV INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT attempts a synthesis between significant elements in terms of architecture of the area surrounding Brașov, looking, at one end, to the Transylvanian Gothic present everywhere since the 13th century, and at the other end, looking to the 1920s when the foundations were laid for the Romanian Aeronautical Enterprise and when the HALA I.A.R., with reinforced concrete arches in the openings, 60 meters high for those times, according to the project of architect G. M. Cantacuzino. In this sense the terminal building is supported by a stuctural form, repetitive, multiplying and extensible by addition. Reinforced concrete diaphragms 15 meters high and 40 meters long are inclined and joined at the top, generating the shape of a "V" with the apex upwards - a stylized and modern reference to the OGIVAL ARCH. These diaphragms, paired by repetition, form a virtual volume that is intersected horizontally by another cylindrical virtual volume - reminiscent of the concrete arches of the I.A.R. HALEI.
The resulting interior space is a central vaulted nave intersected by "ogival" blades.
The exterior space of the main facade (with accesses) is protected along its entire length by a canopy supported by cantilevered "ogival arches".
