Introduction

The Romanian extra-Carpathian cities have gone through a particular history in the last two centuries, with repeated destructions and reconstructions, caused less by the military conflicts that took place in the area and much more by a series of political, socio-economic and administrative transformations, leading to the adoption of new urbanistic doctrines and to achievements accordingly.

The city of Iași, the historic capital of Moldavia, is no exception; it is one of the significant examples in this respect. It can be said that only its impressive size (among the cities in this area) and its consistent, solid morpho-structures have meant that, after a series of urban planning interventions (some of them extremely harsh), its central area still preserves important areas of historical and traditional architecture.
