From the modern architecture of Romania to the artists colony in Ein Hod

The modern city of Tel Aviv is not a pleasant sight, on the contrary. And if there is an enchanting place – why destroy it? The antiquities in Yaffa can rouse within us sentiments of the past. (M.J.)

Marcel Iancu’s departure from Romania in the company of his entire family – his wife and two daughters – was hastened by the Bucharest pogrom and the Legionary Rebellion on 21st-22nd January 1941, with him leaving the country in February of the same year. His brother-in-law was among the countless victims of the pogrom. However, as known, Iancu had been to Palestine three years before, in 1938, perhaps anticipating a future emigration. As a matter of fact, it is known that 1938 was the year of the passing of the first racial laws, which, among others, had a bearing on the activity of Jewish architects.
His departure to Palestine at the age of 46 concluded an era. He was leaving behind a period of artistic and architectural accomplishments that strongly marked Romanian culture
