It’s a Sunday morning in late April 2019, a typical weekend day in Bucharest. It’s fairly warm outside, but not too hot; there aren’t many people on the street, and traffic is light, which makes for a relatively quiet atmosphere in a city that’s generally very crowded and noisy. In the city center, near Cișmigiu Park, in a small square on Ion Brezoianu Street, a group of 8–10 people is working in the green space—sowing seeds, trimming the existing vegetation, and planting flowers and shrubs in the neglected, sun-scorched soil. When you get closer, you see that they’re not from ADP or Spații Verzi, nor from any company that’s sent its employees out for “environmental” volunteer work. Amid the dozens of cars parked all around the square, these amateur gardeners are equipped with gloves and gardening tools, and they seem to know what they’re doing. These are some of the members
