A POSITION OF IMPACT

Looking at Bucharest’s evolution from a historical and architectural-urban planning perspective, it is undeniable that, as early as the late 19th century, its most important intersection was located at the point where the major north-south and east-west axes of the modern city meet—that is, near the University. Beginning in 1903, the square created there when the major boulevards were laid out would bear the name of an eminent Liberal politician, I. C. Brătianu, whose monument—rich in symbols and allegorical elements—would be erected that very year right in the center.

In the 20th century, the boulevards leading to the square would undergo several name changes, always closely tied to the political events of the time.

Looking at the area from the perspective of 1960—a year that ushered in a decade of major changes in the city’s urban and architectural landscape—we learn that Brătianu’s monument had already been gone from the square for 1
