
Competition for the design of the Romanian pavilion at the UIA 2011 in Tokyo
The Romanian Order of Architects launches the competition for the concept and design of the Romanian pavilion for the International Union of Architects (UIA) 2011 Exhibition, which will take place from September 26-28, 2011, in Tokyo. The exhibition takes place within the framework of the International Forum (TIF), a parallel event to the 24th UIA Congress. The competition is open to all Romanian architects working in Romania or abroad, without age limit, gender or professional record.
The main theme of the UIA Congress in Tokyo is DESIGN 2050. The organizers have added three sub-themes to the key concept: - environment: our planet, sustainable architecture, natural disasters, water, agriculture, cosmic environment; - cultural change: advanced information-oriented society, urban issues, economy, transport, education, cultural heritage; - life: population issues, ageing society, infectious diseases, artificial life, biodiversity. The UIA Congress Steering Committee has recently decided to add a sub-theme to the main theme: "Architects acting in solidarity beyond disasters towards sustainable development".
Based on the theme of the UIA Congress, the competition proposes the theme "Decalogue of Responsive and Responsible Architecture - 2050" for the Romanian pavilion.
Registration for the competition is from May 27 to July 1, and the submission of projects is online on July 8, 2011. The jury is composed as follows: Arch. Rudolf Gräf (full member), Arh. Dan Marin (titular member), Ciprian Mihali, philosopher (titular member), Oana Tănase, art critic (titular member), arh. Ana Maria Zahariade (full member), arh. The winner of the competition will sign a contract with the Romanian Order of Architects for the design and execution of the pavilion design, and part of the team will travel to Tokyo to set up the pavilion and promote the concept. The winning projects will be awarded as follows: First Prize - RON 15,000; Second Prize - RON 7,500; Third Prize - RON 3,750.
