Forgotten materials and technologies: lime plasters

The present article deals with materials, general principles for works and some technologies of execution for the conservation of facades from the end of the sec. XIX and early XIX century. XX realized with plaster. The subject is a highly topical one, taking into account the fact that we have, both in Bucharest and in many cities of the country, a built heritage well represented by buildings from this period, some of which are in an advanced state of degradation and need urgent conservation works, while others have been or are being incorrectly restored, most of the times due to lack of knowledge of the materials and construction techniques of the period. This article deals with materials, technologies and general principles for crafts regarding late 19th century and beginning of 20th century facades conservation. The subject is one of high actuality taken inaccount the fact that we have, both in Bucharest and in many others cities, a built environment that is quite well represented by buildings of this period. Some of the buildings are in a severe degree of degradation and in need of urgent remedies. Other constructions were subject of partially or totally inappropriate intervention caused in most cases by lack of knowledge regarding materials and construction techniques of the time.
