A Midsummer School’s Dream

No 1-2/2022 is dedicated to architecture and crafts summer schools in Romania. Summer schools have become increasingly popular lately. They have emerged spontaneously and in the last four years alone the number of such initiatives has doubled to 35. The schools offer a complementary education to that obtained in architecture faculties, with a strong emphasis on physical work and interdisciplinary approaches. Young participants work in blacksmith, carpentry or pottery workshops, building with bricks or earth. During the day they work and learn new skills, while in the evening they enjoy the peace and quiet of the village or forest, in a camp atmosphere. But the schools are not just places of learning, they are also socio-economic tools: small production centers where tradition meets sustainability and new technologies.
