The efforts and fruits of Timisoara's schools
The exhibition "10 years of architecture in Timișoara" was a good opportunity to realize the role and place of "models" in the professional training of student architects. Emphasizing (in comparison with the Bucharest institute) the theoretical nature of the school exercises, the projects emphasize more visible, firmer options. In fact, if we try to grasp a unity of language, a "style", in the projects on display (at the risk of not being perfectly representative of the specific features of the Timisoara school), we can note their predominantly symbolic emphasis. Less interested in constructive subtleties, Timisoara's students are freeing themselves from the dogma of the "sincerity" of facades (here we have called the "iconic" type of signification, typical of "modern architecture", whereby architectural expression closely follows and illustrates the content - the function). They direct their efforts towards the connotative side of architecture, using symbolic signs. Their attempts to create striking, rich, complex images are often successful, a success supported by the care (and skill) with which they write their designs. In this effort, the 'models' that the students from Timișoara follow and the influences that make themselves felt are of particular importance, given the 'programmatic' aspect of the architecture they practice.
