3 reflections on the vineyard landscape

Among all the landscape typologies, the geometry of the vineyard fields can be quickly distinguished by simple visual reading. It is a geometry of both man and nature, without, however, making a note of dissonance with it. Without aggressiveness, it introduces order. It is, perhaps, the most visible and sustainable way of reconciling human activity and nature, symbolically carrying a history of the place, carved into the earth and stone of the hills. For the vine is anchored by its genesis in history.

The landscapes of hillsides planted with vines along river valleys are emblematic, some of them UNESCO World Heritage sites - the Douro Valley (Portugal) or the Rhine Valley (Germany) along the rivers of the same name, or the Wachau Region (Austria) along the Danube1. These are just some of the regions shaped by the passage of centuries, where the vine has been an economic resource understood, developed and exploited. Last but not least, protected!
