Wine tourism and architecture in Spain スペインのエノツーリズムと建築

There are nearly 100 regions in Spain that produce wines with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), and in 2022 Spain was the world's second largest wine exporter after Italy. Rioja, famous for its red Tempranillo wines, is arguably one of Spain's most iconic varieties.

Rioja is one of Spain's main producing regions, with over 600 wineries of all sizes. Since 2000, it began to focus on "enoturism", a form of tourism aimed at visiting wineries, wine tasting and grape picking; then followed a period of development, in which wineries and ancillary facilities began to be designed by famous architects.

This is partly due to the global demand for Spanish wines, but also to the opening of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in 1997, which demonstrated that the impact of contemporary buildings can play a crucial role in promoting tourism and the economy.
