en{coded} fields - Parametric Design Workshop Series

en{coded}fields was born as a surrogate of the Zaha Hadid Studio at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. This series of workshops aims to convey the studio's philosophy and to advance working and learning methods in such a way that it can generate debates on localized issues based on different site-events.

The name has two distinct meanings, on the one hand design heuristics, reflecting the need to inform meaning in architectural territories, and on the other hand modes of operation, using code or parametric design as tools to solve and articulate complex operable social functions.

en{coded}fields is challenging. It launches a series of problems based on localized and site-specific issues, to which participants should find solutions through parametric models. Using the specific digital processes and design heuristics postulated in The Autopoiesis of Architecture theory, participants have to approach an urban context and appropriate to it the principles of Parametricism1 and ParametricUrbanism2 .

The aim is to produce a higher degree of articulation and justifiable continuities that connect the mass and the urban field through processes of parametric accentuation, parametric figuration, parametric versification and parametric reactionary. These processes are aimed at achieving deep relation and reasoning in a system of interrelated urban elements such as: massing and topological systems, navigational and orientation systems, typological and structural systems.

These workshops should be understood as experiments initiated with the intention of challenging both participants and local critics who are introduced to a new kind of discourse. The results have sparked many discussions, new points of view and interesting possibilities as premises for new potential local cityscape solutions based on global heuristics.

This series of design workshops aims to advance and establish an addition to the traditional system of architectural education existing in Romania and beyond.

en{coded}fields was born as an offspring of Zaha Hadid Studio at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. This is a workshop series meant to forward the legacy of the Studio's philosophy and teaching methods in order to generate debate on localized issues, based on various event' locations.

The name is a reflection of double meaning; on the one hand as design-heuristic, reflecting the necessity of meaning informing architectural territories and on the other hand as modi-operandi, through the use of coding or parametric design in order to solve and articulate complex architectural societal functions.

en{coded}fields is a provocation. It launches a series of problematics based on localized, site-specific questions that participants are meant to find answers to. By using specific digital processes and design-heuristics postulated in the theory of The Autopoiesis of Architecture, they need to approach an Urban context and appropriate to it principles of Parametricism1 and ParametricUrbanism2 .

The aim is to produce a higher level of articulation and lawful continuities that will cohere the urban massing and field through processes of parametric accentuation, parametric figuration, parametric versioning and parametric responsiveness. These processes are aiming to achieve a deeper relation and rationality in a system of interrelated urban elements like: massing and topologic systems, navigation and orientation systems, typological and structural systems.

These workshops are to be perceived as experiments carried out with the sole intention of provocation, both to participants and local critics that are introduced to a new type of discourse.

The results have sparked many discussions, new views and interesting possibilities as premises for a potential new way of solving the urban landscape on the local scale based on global heuristics.

This design workshop series is aiming to go forward and establish a meaningful addition to the classical local schools of architecture in Romania and beyond.
