At present, the situation of the rural environment is uncertain, villages being at the crossroads between depopulation, forced modernization or, ideally, their valorization as spaces for the preservation of tradition and peasant cultural heritage.

The main themes addressed in the paper are: the reintegration of forgotten monuments into the contemporary circuit, the revitalization of local communities by perpetuating traditions and creating job opportunities for their communities, combating the depopulation of villages and analyzing how architectural theories such as critical regionalism and contextualism can be applied to the Romanian rural environment.
