Külliye in time: the Ottoman ensemble of Medgidia between recovery and reinvention

Islamic architecture, over the ages, has introduced a number of outstanding examples of specific functional structures. One of them is Külliye, a socio-architectural ensemble that sums up different functional units of buildings, planned and built in one place. Essentially, these ensembles were intended to accelerate urban development in the implemented territories and to respond to the needs of the community they addressed, generating a community nucleus around which the city developed.

An example of this urban model can also be found in Dobrogea, in the historic heart of Medgidia, a city with deep roots
