**The history of agriculture in Brăila is closely linked to its favorable geographical position, with fertile soils and access to the Danube. After 1830, Brăila became an important grain port, and at the end of the 19th century Romania was the world's third largest exporter. Even during the communist period, the city maintained its status as the country's grain mill, supplying counties and exports. The large island of Braila, with 681.3 km² of agricultural land, is one of the largest holdings in Europe. The former port and grain warehouses, connected to railway lines, are now part of a protected historic area in the process of revitalization.
